Small Projects for Small People

It might not be the right time for you to get started on a big project – maybe you’re still dithering about choosing a colour, or maybe you’re a little afraid of mucking it up. Here’s an idea: why don’t you take on a smaller painting project and give yourself some time to practice?

You’ll have noticed the mini kitchen hack that has been gracing our Pinterest feeds for some time now, and there are pint-sized cubby houses all over Instagram, so allow us to suggest tackling an adorably small project for the small people in your life.

Start by purchasing a mini kitchen or cubby house, whatever you’d prefer. Mini kitchen sets are widely available from places like IKEA or Kmart. You could DIY your own cubby house from timber pieces, or better yet purchase one ready-made from your local Bunnings. The Swing Slide Climb Hut Cubby House comes assembled and retails for $199*.

Once you’ve got your set ready to go, it’s time to freshen it up with a coat of paint. Here’s a step-by-step guide to achieving the best results:

1. If your cubby house is going to live outside it’s best you begin with a British Paints® Prep4in1 Water Based coat. Using a water-based product combines the functions of a sealer, primer, undercoat and stain blocker all in one. It’s ideal for optimising your paint job, plus helps to ward off food and beverage stains, because, kids.

2. Once the exterior is ready to paint, choose your colour palate. We recommend finding a main ‘house’ colour, and then choosing an accent colour to add a pop to the overall design. Tip: pick up an accent colour in a sample pot to save on materials.

3. If you’re looking to add any extra elements like numbers, a door, a flower box or even a mailbox, use British Paints SprayEasy to give them a fresh coat of complementing paint. Take a look how Spray Easy was used for this retro fan here.

4. Finish off the overall ‘house’ colour with two coats of British Paints 4Seasons exterior paint in gloss. The extra sparkle will allow your cubby house to stand out – and the 4Seasons paint will defend against sun, rain, wind and mould.

All these tips and tricks will work just as well on a mini kitchen set or any other small play set you choose. If you’ll be keeping your playset indoors, swap out exterior paint for any of our Clean&Protect™ range. It’ll provide a beautiful yet resilient finish, with Ultraprotect™ technology included to protect against mould and bacteria from sticky little fingers.

And that’s it, time to get started.
