A Guide to well-lit living

Overhead lighting, desk and floor lamps can bring a great final touch to any well-designed room or living area. Follow these tips to maximise space and ambience in five key rooms of your house.

Living Room

Light three of four corners, with one light focused on an object such as a piece of artwork or plant. Allow for reading in as many seats as possible with down-lamps.

Dining Room

The centrepiece of your entertaining, and the heart of your family home – make your dining table the brightest spot in the room to draw in guests. Elsewhere, use indirect, flattering lighting with small table lamps.

Kitchen

Overhead lighting on a dimmer will help you maintain light at desired levels as you dice, slice and bake throughout the evening. 

Bedroom

Cosy and insular is the key for any bedroom. A reading lamp by the bed, and recessed or track fixtures near the dressing area are a must – but make sure that neither shine directly on the bed. A low-wattage bulb on a low table will add a cosy glow.
